SHERIFF REFORM

I have supported policies to improve our sheriff system in Vermont, primarily S.17, after speaking about the shortfalls in our statutes. The proposals are a great first step, but they don’t cover everything needed to improve our sheriff’s system. The elimination of the 5% commission was key to reducing dependence on private revenue streams. It will be a major priority to collaborate further with law enforcement on a variety of issues: drug enforcement, criminal and civil statutes, and community trust.

LABOR RIGHTS

Our nation has seen decades of slow wage growth and the decline of organized labor. The average Vermont worker needs to have protections and rights in a globalized and highly specialized market. Unions are our best bet we have to give workers and businesses power over their own interests. In short, I will support Prop 3 in the House and make sure every Vermonter can be successful and the right to choose whether to organize their workplace and participate in collective bargaining agreements.

HEALTHCARE

The legislature’s recent bill, H.766, is a major first step to reducing the bureaucracy of our healthcare system. My mother worked for Novartis — one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical suppliers — and it’s simple: they’re getting away with too much. Expanding H.766 to include more healthcare procedures and costs will reduce the impact on all of Vermont’s families.
